Capability training and sustainment require significant effort and investment. Knowledge and experience are gained and imparted across years – and even decades. Developing capability in shorter time-cycles and retaining this capability and experience is a problem faced by many complex asset intensive organisations across the world, including Australia’s Defence force.
Downer, with the Royal Australian Navy, investigated how emerging technology can provide a solution to this problem and deliver a fundamental shift to training, upskilling, and capturing best practice methodologies across the service – on land and sea.
Downer and Navy selected Taqtile’s Manifest platform, which has been deployed by top-tier customers including the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Airforce. The platform leverages proven technologies including augmented reality, 3D visualisation, and real-time collaborative communication to empower deskless employees to complete complex tasks more efficiently, completely and safely.
The Manifest platform has proved successful in enabling Navy’s own subject matter experts to efficiently capture and directly support the raise-train-sustain cycle in the training room, during an exercise, and on mission.
A successful demonstration of the program received positive feedback from Chief of Navy, fellow officers, and key Defence stakeholders.
From the initial pilot in early-2021, the solution is now being considered in various Navy work streams.
Downer will be demonstrating the solution at the annual Military Communications and Information Systems (MilCIS) conference in Canberra between 15-17 November 2022.
