Downer has acquired the remaining 73 per cent of shares in ‘MHPS-ANZ Plant Services Pty Ltd’ from the Japanese-owned Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems.
MHPS-ANZ Plant Services is well known in Australia and New Zealand as specialists in the design, supply, construction, maintenance and overhaul of boilers, turbines and other mechanical and electrical plant. The acquisition enhances Downer’s services to customers in the power generation and industrial (PG&I) sectors.
With roots stemming back to 1933 as Riley Dodds (Australia), who provided steam generation solutions for the Australian market, it then became part of the Clyde Babcock Hitachi (CBH) joint venture in 1990. This team then became MHPS-ANZ when, in 2014, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi established a joint venture to service the power generation and industrial markets globally.
MHPS-ANZ has now been fully integrated into the Asset Services business within Downer’s Mining, Energy and Industrial Division.
In conjunction with the share purchase agreement, Downer and MHPS have entered into an Alliance Agreement, which provides Downer with exclusive rights to be the Agent for MHPS in the Australian and New Zealand regions. This will allow both parties to offer an extensive and unique service suite to the power generation and industrial markets including, engineering, maintenance, shutdown and project services, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support and spare parts sales across Australia and New Zealand.
To acknowledge its history and to celebrate and recognise Downer’s ownership, this Alliance has adopted the new trading name ‘DMH Plant Services Pty Ltd’ (DMH) and will be an important part of Downer’s Mining, Energy and Industrial Division. The acquisition represents a substantial ‘win-win’ combining DMH’s specialist and technical expertise with Downer’s financial strength, business networks and geographical presence.
Downer's Chief Executive Officer of Mining, Energy and Industrial, Brendan Petersen, said the acquisition of MHPS-ANZ presents a significant opportunity for Downer to immediately access specialist skills and experience in the power generation and industrial sectors.
“We are also pleased to form the Alliance with MHPS Japan which is an excellent strategic fit for our PG&I business. The DMH business complements and substantially enhances our existing power generation and industrial capabilities by combining OEM know-how with technical expertise on a diverse range of sites from power stations, sugar mills and refineries to a range of industrial process plants,” Brendan said.
