The Australian Government and the Tasmanian Governments have jointly committed $6 million for the Campbell Town Pedestrian Underpass on an 80:20 funding arrangement.
The underpass will improve safety for people crossing this busy road, especially school children accessing the recreation ground and patients attending the Campbell Town Health Centre. Its design complies with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and will include a ramp for cyclists and people using electric scooters, wheelchairs and prams.
Excavation of the tunnel began in January 2022, and temporary widening of the highway has allowed motorists to be diverted away from the worksite without impacting their journey.
During the project earth is excavated to a depth of 4.5 metres and a width of 6 metres. When the concrete floor, ceiling and walls are put in place, the final dimensions will be 3 metres wide and 2.4 metres high and will be & 105 metres long.
