The 75th and final train as part of the Queensland’s fleet of New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) fleet has been upgraded at Downer’s Maryborough site and is in service supporting Queensland’s passengers.

The NGR trains provide a significant increase to the capacity of the South East Queensland train fleet. All 75 trains were manufactured by Alstom, who awarded Downer part of the $335.7 million NGR accessibility upgrade program.

This program of work has delivered the most accessible rail fleet Queensland has ever seen. The accessibility upgrades include the addition of a second toilet on all 75 NGR 6-car sets, increasing the size of toilet modules by 10% and installing new functional improvements for people with disabilities.

The upgrades to the fleet commenced in 2019 and finished in July 2024.

Talking of the project, Project Manager Amanda Wroe was humbled to be able to deliver such an important piece of work.

“To be part of the project delivering the most accessible rail fleet Queensland has ever seen is a humbling moment,” she said.

“I want to thank the team here at Downer who worked to make these upgrades over the last five years, as well as all of our stakeholders and customers to deliver this project for the people of Queensland.”
