Full steam ahead for Queensland Train Manufacturing Program at Torbanlea
01/09/2025
Construction of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program’s (QTMP) purpose-built facility at Torbanlea is making progress, with wall cladding now nearing completion and installation of specialist equipment underway.
Alongside these major construction milestones, Downer has launched a large-scale recruitment campaign to build the skilled workforce that will manufacture 65 six-car passenger trains for the South East Queensland network.
Around 200 frontline and 100 professional positions are on offer, spanning a wide range of roles. Opportunities include electrical trades, fabricators, mechanical trades, painters and semi-skilled assembly workers, as well as professional positions in administration and support, planning and scheduling, quality and testing, production and operations management, and technical and specialist fields.
QTMP People and Culture Director, David Fowler, said Downer was proud to continue its long-standing connection with the Fraser Coast through this project.
“Downer has been part of the Fraser Coast’s rail history for more than 150 years, and we’re excited to continue that legacy through QTMP,” Mr Fowler said.
“We’re looking to fill a wide range of positions at the Torbanlea facility, with recruitment phased from 2026. As one of Australia’s largest employers, we are committed to empowering local talent and delivering positive outcomes and growth for the communities in which we operate.”
Available positions are listed on our Careers page, with interviews scheduled to commence in October 2025. Roles will progressively start from early 2026, coinciding with the beginning of train manufacturing.
The Queensland Government awarded Downer the QTMP contract in June 2023. The program includes designing and delivering 65 new six-car passenger trains at the Torbanlea facility, with maintenance and stabling at a new rail facility in Ormeau on the Gold Coast.
