Downer operates a major facility in Hexham, just north of Newcastle. From this base we provide mechanical and electrical shutdowns, turnarounds and outage services to major industrial and power generation clients across the region – including the Port of Newcastle, Bayswater Power Station and Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group. 

Our Hexham facility also serves as an electrical manufacturing hub, where we manufacture switchboards, switch rooms and substations for customers around Australia. 

Hexham is also home to Downer’s Technical Operations Centre in Hexham, which coordinates Downer’s telecommunications project support across Australia, with 21 employees working 24/7 to connect and restore faults in the NBN and Telstra networks in WA, SA and the NT.

Downer is also well-known for:

  • Our Cardiff rail facility, home to over 150 employees taking care of Sydney’s Millennium and Waratah train fleets, which were also built there.
  • Construction of the Light Rail Network in Newcastle and maintaining the fleet
  • Our plant in Teralba supplying asphalt to the Hunter region and NSW
  • The recently completed infrastructure upgrades at RAAF Base Williamtown and Newcastle Airport
