Chief Engineer and Executive General Manager Engineering & Technology

Julian is an internationally experienced engineering leader with over 35 years’ of experience in the rail industry. As the Executive General Manager – Engineering & Technology at Downer, he directs a multidisciplinary professional engineering team delivering specialised technical and assurance services across heavy rail, light rail, and freight applications.

Julian’s team is responsible for supplying  engineering expertise to Downer’s Rail & Transit Systems, which is responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of some of Australia’s largest passenger fleets, as well as delivering Downer’s rapidly growing Engineering Consulting Services to the wider rail industry. 

Julian has spent over 25 years’ in engineering consultancy and has held lead roles on several major global projects becoming a highly trusted client advisor.  Julian brings a passion for client satisfaction, technical excellence and delivering complex programs with purpose and the highest levels of assurance.

General Manager Engineering

Nathan offers nearly two decades of technical and leadership expertise within the rail industry. He currently leads the Engineering Capability and Assurance team at Downer as General Manager, and is a key member of Engineering Consulting Services.

His international experience spans the United Kingdom, Australia, and numerous projects across Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. As a passionate innovator, Nathan has developed many solutions for complex technical challenges, including  a passenger vehicle Electronic Levelling Control system that enhances level access and boarding equity.

Nathan is dedicated to utilising Downer Rail & Transit Systems broad engineering experience to provide valued solutions, advice, and services to the engineering consulting market.

Chris is a chartered engineer with the UK Engineering Council and has over 35 years’ experience in freight and passenger rollingstock design and assurance. Having previous engineering roles in rollingstock design, manufacturing and consultancy, Chris is now responsible for leading the Downer Rail & Transit Systems, decarbonisation and freight engineering strategy.
