At Downer, our graduate programs are structured to give students extensive knowledge about our company in a supportive environment by offering formal programs for graduates of:
- Civil Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Mechanic Engineering
- Construction Management
- Mining Engineering
- Environmental Science
- Human Resources
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Commercial/ Finance.
Our Road operations in Western Australia offer a two-year program which provides graduates with an opportunity to rotate throughout various divisions every six months to gain a broader understanding of the business.
The program includes an opportunity for graduates to participate in team building activities with their peers, project and construction managers and general management. Our formal mentoring program is a positive and constructive way to support and guide our graduates.
Regular rotations, your choice of placements and a strong mentoring program are highlights of the graduate program by our resources operations.
Graduates are offered placements in Brisbane or in open-cut and underground mine sites across Australia and, as we work in the international environment, there may also be opportunities to visit abroad.
An integral part of graduate development is three levels of support and coaching throughout the program in the form of a day-to-day supervisor, an appointed mentor and a career champion. The career champion is typically someone at general manager level who is assigned to the graduate for the duration of their program and who mentors the individual.
We offer an industry-leading remuneration package, along with all the benefits that come with working with the Downer team.
The program is self-paced and graduates have the flexibility to progress through the program as quickly or slowly as they like. We recognise that success comes through individual achievements and development - not in a specific timeframe.
Completing our graduate program can also open the door for advancement opportunities within the Downer Group as suitable positions arise.
Graduates working with our Rail operations will gain a deep knowledge of our transport capability with our two-year graduate program. Their progress is monitored regularly through monthly and half yearly structured reviews with the graduate’s allocated manager. Strong structured coaching and mentoring are key to keeping a graduated focused and motivated and a dedicated program coordinator is an additional support for their career development.
At Downer we recognise that many of today’s global challenges are being tackled and resolved by engineers and as a result, we offer aspiring professional’s scholarship opportunities to kick start their careers.
In partnership with both La Trobe and Deakin University in Victoria, our subsidiary company, Spiire, has established Scholarship Programs which support students while they complete a tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering.
Through the scholarships we contribute financially through paid vacation work and access to career mentoring advice from practising engineers. We also offer post graduate employment opportunities.
Our resources operations also offer scholarships to second year mining engineering, surveying and health and safety tertiary students. We provide students with financial assistance and encourage them to take the next step on their journey with us through our graduate program.
From our perspective, both scholarships are an ideal precursor to our graduate program and another way for us to contribute to the community.
Trades people are the backbone of our business and we consistently offer apprenticeships across a range of trades. Please submit your expression of interest via our Careers Portal to ensure you are considered for the next round of programs.
Our Road operation teams in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory offer cadet programs which include contribution to the cost of our cadets' education and in return, they are prepared for an inspiring career with the Downer Group.
The program provides an opportunity for tertiary students to gain work experience during their semester breaks at a grassroots level and during this time they learn about all aspects of the business, before progressing their career.
We provide each cadet with:
- Financial assistance for their studies throughout the year
- Paid vacation work
- Guaranteed permanent position at the end of their studies
Vacation and undergraduate work provide students with hands-on experience and knowledge about our business. Access to a real work environment and site visits provide insight into what is involved in civil engineering and project management.
