Downer delivers the best race track in the world!

Downer has played a huge part in making the world’s fastest championship motorcycling track even faster with the resurfacing of the Phillip Island race track.

11 and 12 December, the Downer road surfacing teams resurfaced the track ready for the 2013 racing season. The track already produces the fastest average speed lap in world championship motorcycling.

A mobile asphalt plant was moved to the site to provide the fire power to produce the 5,000 tonnes of asphalt needed to pave the 4.45 kilometre track. The circuit is used 300 days a year for racing and testing. The resurfacing will have at least a ten year life span and is designed to satisfy the needs of riders and drivers.

The Project commenced in late October when the mobile asphalt plant was established inside the circuit over night following the Moto GP. Site works commenced in earnest on Monday 3 December with the removal of 40mm off the old surface and the construction of extensive new runoff areas at turn 1 and turn 4. This work was all completed ready for the placing of the new surface over two days this week.

Chief Operating Officer, Downer Infrastructure East, Sergio Cinerari described the project as a huge logistical exercise and a great team effort.

“More than 35 heavy machines and 70 people were involved in this operation which saw five metres of track laid every minute. It was absolutely imperative that we delivered the smoothest track for the fastest racing.

“It is certainly satisfying when you see the teams at Downer work together to deliver a world class outcome. This project involved our civil construction, laboratory, profiling, asphalt production, transport and laying teams from Melbourne and the surfacing team from Mogo in NSW. A big thank you to all the people involved for working together to make Phillip Island the best race track in the world!”
